Summer safety tips for seniors

With summer well and truly upon us, it is more important than ever to pay close attention to the health of ourselves and those around us, particularly our senior loved ones. As the mercury rises, take note of our summer safety tips for seniors for a healthy and safe season!

Reduce strenuous activities
With higher temperatures on the horizon, stay up to date with the weather forecast and plan to stay out of the sun or indoors with air conditioning on hot days. Moving around will increase body temperature which can lead to heatstroke, dehydration and other health complications.

Sun protection
Applying a high factor SPF is important any time of the year, but particularly during the summer months when spending more time outdoors and UV rays are at their strongest. Be sure to reapply every few hours when outdoors and wear a hat, sunglasses and collared shirts for extra protection. Opting for the shade when outdoors is a great idea too!

Keep hydrated
Making a conscious effort to stay hydrated is important throughout summer as it can be all too easy to get dehydrated during the warmer months. Drinking adequate water, reducing caffeine and alcohol intake and eating plenty of fresh fruit will help keep hydration levels up.

Wear light clothing
Opting for lighter colours and loose-fitting clothes will help keep the body cool during the upcoming hot months. Natural fabrics such as cotton and linen are perfect options for staying comfortable and keeping heat away from the body.

Eat a healthy diet
Fill your plate with all the colours of the rainbow to keep your health in tip top shape. Vegetables, fruits and nourishing whole grains will deliver all the key vitamins and minerals required for a healthy, functioning system and keep your immune system strong, which will help to ward off any nasty summer bugs!

Review medications
Ahead of the summer season, take some time to review your medications with your GP to ensure you are stocked up for the months ahead. Some medications can cause sensitivities to ultraviolet rays, so it’s important to be aware of these ahead of time and plan your summer accordingly.
